Recent work indicates that reduced control of external moments on objects, and therefore increased errors in object orientation during grasp and manipulation, may be an important characteristic of aging-related declines in manual dexterity. The potential causes of this reduced control generate a list of the usual suspects, including changes in sensory functioning, sarcopenia, declining function of dopaminergic systems, increased force unsteadiness, along with newer candidates like impaired finger coordination synergies.

The challenge for scientists is to design experiments that better address causality using these more specific characteristics of declining fine dexterity. Possible designs include intervention studies, and longitudinal studies that track changes in fine dexterity beyond slowing, along with changes in measures that reflect candidate mechanisms..
